Aberystwyth was not quite able to raise the eight players required for the A versus B match on Tuesday 21 March, so the match took place on three boards only. Both James Corrigan and Rudy van Kemenade enjoy complex tactical positions, so it was no surprise when James, playing White for the B team, managed to conjure up an unexpected attack in a Three Knights’ Game and Rudy found dangerous counterplay. Analysis reveals that James missed a couple of chances, but when the attack ran out of steam, Black had a big lead in material. I played quietly against Sam Holman’s Sicilian, transposing to an English-type position, in which I was the first to break in the centre. Sam’s counter with the f-pawn created a weakness on e6, allowing me to establish a knight there, which proved a decisive advantage. Damien Clarke was unable to maintain the White pawn centre against Tony Geraghty in a Slav Defence, and then compounded his difficulties by dropping a piece, leaving Black with an easy win. The unplayed game has been registered as a win for the A-team, no doubt under League regulations, so the result is a 4-0 victory for them.
